Former sex work · Education · Writing and teaching

Melissa Petro’s career story moves from sex work into elementary education and then into authorship and writing instruction. It belongs among transitions out of the adult industry.

Reclaiming a public narrative

In a 2024 interview with The Rumpus, Petro described how her writing evolved through accounts of sex work, becoming a teacher, losing her teaching career following public exposure, and motherhood.

Her book, Shame on You: How to Be a Woman in the Age of Mortification, was published in 2024. The interview explains how she developed her personal history into a wider exploration of shame.

An Esalen faculty biography documents her work as a writing facilitator and her qualifications in women’s studies, childhood education and creative nonfiction. Her later teaching and writing work is an important part of the story.
