Adult films, European cinema, television, and advocacy
Background
Sibel Kekilli worked in adult films before her breakthrough in Fatih Akin’s Head-On. Her official biography traces the casting opportunity that began in 2002 and led to an acclaimed career in European cinema.
The career transition
She later became internationally known as Shae in HBO’s Game of Thrones. Beyond acting, her public work includes advocacy against violence toward women and involvement with Terre des Femmes and the UNIDAS women’s network.
Dignity across careers
Her career demonstrates the importance of assessing an actor’s work on its merits. Coverage of her earlier occupation has also prompted debate about stigma and a performer’s ability to move forward without being reduced to their past.
